Carry-On Only Mexico Packing List (What I Packed for 7 Days)

If you’ve ever overpacked for a beach trip and worn half of what you brought… same.

We just got back from Akumal, Mexico, and I packed carry-on only for the entire trip—without sacrificing outfits, comfort, or options.

Akumal is south of Cancun in Riviera Maya — right between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

I’m sharing exactly what I packed, what I actually wore, and the system that made it all work (plus a printable you can use for your next trip).

Why Akumal?

If you haven’t heard of Akumal, it’s a quieter alternative to places like Cancun or Tulum—think relaxed, beautiful beaches, and a slower pace.

We stayed in a VRBO, which is almost always my preference for trips like this. It gave us more space, easy beach access, and just felt simpler with kids.

There are tons of great vacation rental options in the area, but if you prefer a more traditional resort experience, there are a few really good ones nearby too—like Akumal Bay Beach & Spa Resort or Secrets Akumal.

What We Did:

Snorkeling & Water

  • Yal-Ku Lagoon – calm, clear water and really easy snorkeling
  • Akumal Bay (sea turtles!) – this was a highlight. You can snorkel right off the beach and see turtles in their natural habitat
  • Akumal Dive Shop: Lots of options for Scuba diving

Beach + Villa Time

  • Beach days
  • Pool + relaxing at the villa (honestly a big part of the trip)
  • Lunch most days at Lol-Ha Restaurant — super casual, right on the water, amazing food, and easy with kids

Ruins + Cenotes

  • Tulum Ruins (~20 min drive) – easy, quick, and worth seeing
  • Coba Ruins (~1 hour) – One of our favorites—you can rent bikes and ride through the ruins. There are also a few more low-key cenotes nearby that feel less crowded
  • Casa Tortuga Cenotes (~15 min) – multiple cenotes, a lazy river, and places to jump. This one is more built-out and “tour-style,” but still really fun

Around Town

  • Exploring Akumal — small, walkable, very low-key
  • Stop at Super Chomak for snacks and basics
  • A few little shops for souvenirs

Spa

  • Buddha Gardens Spa — great massages, just note they only take cash
  • If you want something more budget-friendly, head into Playa del Carmen for more options

Tulum + Playa del Carmen

Both are about 20 minutes from Akumal, which makes it really easy to mix in a little exploring without overplanning your days.

  • Tulum: Great for visiting the ruins, but overall it leans more trendy/party. We usually skip spending much time here since we’re traveling as a family, but it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for more of a scene.
  • Playa del Carmen: Definitely busier, but fun for an evening out. We like to go in for dinner, a little shopping, and a change of pace from the slower Akumal vibe. One of our go-to spots here is Romeo Trattoria Pizzeria for really good, homemade Italian.

We tend to skip the bigger, more touristy parks like Xel-Há Park and Xcaret Park—we just prefer slower, more low-key days—but they’re great options if you want more built-in activities.

This mix of beach, exploring, and dinners out is exactly why I pack the way I do.

Where We Ate (Our Favorites)

We kept things pretty simple most days, but had a few go-to spots we kept coming back to:

  • Lol-Ha Restaurant — great for lunch or dinner, right on the beach. Their guacamole is so good and I could honestly eat the chicken fajitas every day.
  • Taverna Akumal — a solid Italian option when you want something a little different from beach food.
  • Turtle Bay Bakery & Cafe — good for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but we mostly went for the homemade ice cream. Don’t skip the “Akumal Road.”
  • La Buena Vida — the food isn’t the standout here, but the setting absolutely is. Right on the beach, swings at the bar, and Wednesday night karaoke if you want something fun and casual.
  • La Piccolina Akumal — a newer grab-and-go pizza spot that’s perfect for an easy night in.

We also usually head into Playa del Carmen for dinner one night for a little more energy—I’ll shared our favorite spots there in the section above.
