What’s in My Travel Toiletry Bag (Carry-On Only System)

One of the biggest shifts that made carry-on travel easier for me was creating a toiletry setup that stays packed between trips.

Instead of rebuilding toiletries every time I travel, I keep a consistent, grab-and-go system with the essentials already in place. Before a trip, I only add a few makeup items or destination-specific adjustments.

This removes one of the most time-consuming parts of packing.

My Toiletry Bag Approach

I rotate between two toiletry bags depending on trip type and space needs:

• a hanging toiletry bag for longer trips or hotel bathrooms with limited counter space
• a divided Dopp kit for when I want a more compact setup (this has been my go to lately)

Both support the same internal system — the structure doesn’t change, only the container.

That consistency is what makes packing faster.

What Stays Packed (My Core Toiletry Essentials)

I keep the essentials stocked so I can grab the bag without thinking.

Skincare basics
Daily cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and a few travel-size treatment products. Here’s the exact items I keep:

Oral care
Mini items of what you love to use at home. Plus a toothbrush that always stays in your kit. I have the following:

Hair essentials
Travel-size hair products and tools I use consistently.
Pro tip: buy minis of the same shampoo you use at home and then it’s easy to refill the same containers with what you already have. This is what I bring:

Body Care
Basic essentials that are often needed during travel. Here’s what I always have:

A collection of personal care items including a pink razor in a case, a tube of Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion, a container of Secret Clinical deodorant, a pair of tweezers, and nail clippers, all placed on a wooden surface.

Makeup basics
Makeup is the only category I don’t keep fully stocked. I adjust it depending on the destination, activities and how polished I need to be. Is it a more rugged trip, like an African safari, where you won’t wear much makeup? Or is it a trip where you are going to parties or events and need more?

Here are the basics I always end up bringing and then add more as needed depending on the trip:

Trip-Specific Additions
If I’m going on a trip where I’ll be in the sun a lot more, I’ll bring the following items:

The goal is to use what you love and keep everything ready to grab and go.

How I Keep It Grab-and-Go

The most helpful habit is treating my toiletry bag as a permanent kit.

That means:

• refilling items when I get home
• replacing travel containers before they run out
• keeping duplicates of frequently used products
• maintaining the same organization each trip

This prevents last-minute decisions and forgotten essentials.

Hanging Bag vs Dopp Kit (How I Choose)

Both work well — the decision depends on trip context.

I use a hanging toiletry bag when:

  • counter space may be limited
  • I want everything visible at once

I use a Dopp kit when:

  • space is tighter
  • I want a simpler setup
  • I’m packing lighter overall (but still amazed at how much this holds!)

The internal categories stay the same regardless.

Why a Consistent Toiletry System Matters

A consistent toiletry setup reduces packing friction more than almost anything else.

When your essentials stay packed:

  • packing is faster
  • you’re less likely to forget items. (I actually forgot my entire toiletry bag on trips TWICE and that made for a rough arrival!)
  • organization stays consistent
  • suitcase space is predictable
  • travel days feel calmer

It’s a small system with a big impact.

If You’re Starting Simple

Start with:

• one toiletry bag you like using
• travel-size versions of your daily essentials
• refillable containers
• consistent category grouping

The most important shift isn’t the bag — it’s keeping it packed.

Where This Fits in My Packing System

My toiletry setup is part of a broader carry-on packing framework built around repeatable decisions.

Here are a few questions I get often about toiletry packing:

FAQ

Do you keep a separate toiletry bag just for travel?
Yes. Keeping a dedicated travel kit is what makes the system work.

Do you bring full-size products?
Rarely. Travel sizes and refillable containers create more flexibility. Plus, this is really the only way with carry-on only!

How often do you restock it?
Usually right after returning home so it’s ready for the next trip.

Is a hanging bag better than a Dopp kit?
Neither is better — they serve different trip contexts. What works best for you?
