The Ultimate Sports Tournament Packing List for Tournament Weekends

If you’ve ever found yourself throwing shin guards into a bag at 6am while simultaneously yelling “has anyone seen your water bottle?!” — this one’s for you.

We are a multi-sport family. At any given weekend, we might have a tennis match an hour from home, a volleyball tournament across the state, and a soccer game somewhere in between. Sometimes we’re back in our own beds by Sunday night. Other times we’re loading up the car for a full out-of-state trip, hotel and all, cheering our girls on through back-to-back competition days.

Either way — local or out of state, one sport or three — there is always something. And the one thing that has saved my sanity more than anything else? A really good packing list.

Not just any packing list. One that I can hand to my kids so they can start gathering their own gear, and then use myself to double-check before we walk out the door. Because if you think you’ll remember everything without one, tournament weekend will quickly prove you wrong.

So whether you’re a seasoned tournament family or just starting out, here is everything you need to pack for a sports tournament weekend — organized, practical, and tested from real experience.

What to Pack: Clothing

Let’s start with the obvious — but also the most forgotten. Clothing seems straightforward until you’re at a two-day tournament and your athlete has one clean uniform left.

  • Sport-specific uniform or outfit (x2) — always pack a backup. Always.
  • Shirts/tops — for before, after, and between competitions
  • Extra shorts or pants
  • Socks — and then more socks — extra pairs are non-negotiable
  • Underwear
  • Pajamas — if you’re staying overnight
  • Warm up jacket or hoodie — mornings at outdoor venues can be brutal
  • Sweatshirt for layering
  • Outfit for travel
  • Sport-specific shoes — keep these in the bag, not on their feet
  • Sandals or slides — for walking around, the hotel, between games
  • Swimsuit — if there’s a hotel pool, your kids will never forgive you for forgetting this one

What to Pack: Essentials

These are the items that live in the tournament bag permanently at our house. Once I started keeping a dedicated tournament bag stocked and ready, the morning scramble got so much better.

  • Sport-specific equipment — rackets, balls, cleats, kneepads — whatever your sport requires
  • Water bottle — plus an extra if you can swing it
  • Electrolytes — our favorites are Liquid IV and Relyte, but get whatever your athlete likes. Hydration is everything.
  • Sports bag — a good one that fits everything
  • Hat or visor — for outdoor tournaments especially
  • Sunscreen (face and body) — reapplication too, not just one application at 8am. My favorite face SPF (good for teenage skin and sweat resistant), our favorite spray (not sticky and smells good), and favorite lotion SPF.
  • Pillow — for the car ride or the hotel

What to Pack: First Aid

This is the section most parents skip — until they need it. I’ve learned the hard way that a blister in the middle of a tournament can derail an entire competition day. A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Band-aids — various sizes
  • Blister pads — a game changer, especially for long tournament days. We had some especially bad blisters at our volleyball tournament this weekend and these exact ones saved the day.
  • Pain reliever — Advil or Tylenol, athlete’s choice
  • Instant ice pack — keep one or two in the bag at all times. I can’t believe how cold these actually get!
  • Athletic tape or KT tape — incredibly versatile for minor injuries and support
  • Ace bandage — for wrapping ankles, knees, whatever needs it. Also great at holding ice packs on!

What to Pack: Electronics + Toiletries

Long drives and hotel nights mean your athlete needs to be entertained and comfortable. Don’t overlook the basics here.

Electronics:

  • Phone + charger
  • AirPods or headphones — essential for pre-competition focus
  • iPad or device — for downtime between matches or games
  • All chargers — I keep a small pouch dedicated to just chargers in our tournament bag

Toiletries:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Retainer or contacts if needed
  • Hairbrush and hair ties — extra hair ties always, they disappear constantly
  • Lotion (face and body)
  • Any medications

Before You Leave: The Night-Before Checklist

This is where the magic actually happens. I do not pack the morning of a tournament anymore. It changed everything.

The night before, run through this:

✔ Pack bags the night before (yes, all of them)
✔ Confirm game or match time and location
✔ Check the full tournament schedule so there are no surprises ✔ Charge all devices
✔ Prep water bottles and electrolytes
✔ Pack snacks for games and travel
✔ Pull cash for food vendors and snack stands
✔ Double-check all sport-specific equipment is in the bag

If everything is by the door the night before, tournament morning becomes almost calm. Almost.

What Most Athletes Forget

After years of tournament weekends, these are the things I see families scrambling for most often. Consider this your final check before you zip the bag:

  • Extra socks — seriously, just throw in two more pairs
  • Electrolytes — they pack the water bottle and forget the electrolytes every time
  • Sunscreen — even on cloudy days, even for indoor sports (the drives to venues add up)
  • Hat or visor — especially for long outdoor tournament days
  • Snacks between games — not just for the drive, but for in between competitions
  • Backup outfit — uniforms get dirty, wet, and torn
  • Cooling towel — a small luxury that makes a huge difference on hot days. Sometimes we also like a spray bottle to cool off on hot days.
  • Extra hair ties — they will be gone within the first hour
